Headline: Governor Newsom Proclaims State of Emergency in Southern California As Powerful Storm Makes Landfall
Details: Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency for eight counties in Southern California as a series of winter storms began impacting the state with high winds, damaging rain, and heavy snowfall. The affected counties include Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. The emergency proclamation allows for a California National Guard response, facilitates unemployment benefits for impacted residents, and simplifies the process for out-of-state contractors and utilities to repair storm damage. Governor Newsom also visited the State Operations Center near Sacramento for an update on the storm and the state’s response efforts.
Member Advisory: Price gouging protections are activated immediately following a state of emergency declaration by the President of the United States, the Governor of California, or a city or county executive officer. Price gouging is defined as raising prices more than 10% of what they were before the declaration. These protections generally apply for 30 days after the declaration.
